Just a thought. So many battlefields had tall Corn/Maize plants as a major part of tactical movement. Is there a plastic manufacturer who might provide sprues of plants able to be planted in bases? Metal would be far too expensive due to quantities involved. Have seen a U.S site offering based plants but shipping, again, is too much. Generic 'tall crop plants' could be painted as Bean fields etc. Thinking about pipecleaner plants but might be more work than growing the things!
AstroTurf doormat, highlighted yellow works for me.
Steve Barber models does Lasercut paper corn plants, I think they are quite a bit of work, but he says they are quite popular. Drop him an e-mail as there are no prices on his website . I think they are about £12 a sheet of 8 Plants
GL-083 Greenline - laser cut paper plants - Corn plants. A4 sheet.

You could also look at Florist or Wreath making Supplies. I think what your looking for are "Spruce stems "
Thanks for suggestions. Spruce Stems would have been ideal but not around on ebay to scale in UK. Local Hobbycraft shop had 'tinsel' pipecleaner stems good for 10mm. Well sprayed with matt greens...(still some shiny bits!)...but could look the biz...eventually! lol. Work in progress, as they say. =)
I bought a plain rubber-backed doormat from Wilkinsons for £2 and cut it up. I gave half of it away, as I ended up with too much!

I had one of them until Ma Subs found it. Now it's by the front door! Keep meaning to get another.
These are some pretty effective maize plants:

Good reason not to get ACW - be stuck with lots of terrain you couldn't use anywhere else!
North Africa?
France?
Italy?
Russia?

Well found, that man!
Before I posted, I spent a good twenty five minutes trying to find this chap's blog. I read it a few weeks ago and liked the idea although a bit longwinded plus I'm not a great fan of ACW in anything bigger than 6mm.

Maize didn't grow in these places in the periods of any wargaming interest.
