Links the story of Hiram Maxim and the soldiers from the Isle of Skye, with the ever watchable Neil Oliver.
Saw that first time round, recommended both as a technical discussion on the machine gun and as a story on the futility and waste of war.
A well discussed and scripted programme. Maybe I should not have watched it straight after lunch! Urgh.
Just watched this last night on BBC3 :

Really good. Focuses on the defence of the Mons Canal and switches between a birds eye view
and reconstructed action. Even knowing that this is a limited reconstruction, it brought home
the insane courage required to offer resistance under a hail of bullets. Looking forward to the
rest of this series as I felt that it brought our current consideration of WWI to life and away from
grainy B&W pics.

I agree Phil
Looking forward to the rest of the series, thanks for the heads up Phil
Just watched that programme on Mons. Quite surprised to see the first German prisoner was a hussar. Extremely well put together reconstruction.

I find him very hard to watch. The subjects interest me, but no matter how much I am interested his voice iritates me until i reach for the "off" button.
I think he is rather overt in his distate for those of us who live on the southern part of this island.
