Title: Crusaders & Enemies
Post by: fred. on 01 July 2014, 08:53:07 PM
Looking at the new Saga Crescent and Cross, and wondering about doing it in 10mm.

The details of units are still a bit vague but as it is historically based then it should be possible to get an idea of the core troops needed

Crusaders  & Military Orders
Early Medieval and Normans would seem to provide the core.

Some of the units I'm a bit less sure about include
Warriors on foot (bows) - the various longbow codes look a bit late.
Crusader Pilgrims (Levy)

Saracens
The Dark Ages Arabs should be able to provide the core units, again these I'm not certain about
Levy with bow (the figures shown for these don't really fit the Arab Archers)
Bedouin Scouts (eight warriors who may be mounted on camels!),
the Naffata (Turkish flame bomb throwers!)
the Daylami (Persian javelin armed warriors)
fanatical Pilgrims

Any ideas on figures would be great.

These are some of the figures Gripping Beast are suggesting (in 28mm)

I think you've listed the Pendraken options pretty comprehensively. The Mamluk Tabadarriyyah have always been a favourite of mine; I use dark ages huscarls for the job. And don't forget that if Pendraken don't have it, you can often find crusades stuff in Magister Militum (big range, tho' their horses are a bit stumpy), Kallistra (haven't used 'em, but they have a range of Teutonics), Tridente Bologna (ditto), Irregular Miniatures (some of their better figures, I think),and even Copplestone (only a few suitable fantasy figures, but they're very good).

The Byzantines aren't the first folk who come to mind in the crusades, but they shouldn't be overlooked; they add a very different ingredient to the mix, and if you've got the players around, the word campaign might come to mind. :)

Leven and Timecast have good ranges of middle eastern buildings. Palm trees in great profusion may be had by visiting any toyshop and looking at the tattiest plastic soldiers or dinosaurs, sets of which usually have palms at prices that can crawl under a duck.

Daylami mercenaries were employed widely, see Daylami Tribesman by Ian Heath (http://warfare.meximas.com/WRG/Dark_Ages-106-Daylami-Tribesman.htm)
Warriors with double headed spears on an ivory castle in Italy may be Daylami. (http://warfare.meximas.com/11/Fatimid_Morgan_Casket-front-detail.htm)
See Fatimid Warriors & hunters (http://warfare.meximas.com/11/Fatimid-military.htm) & Seljuk Costume & soldiers (http://warfare.meximas.com/Turk/Seljuk.htm) for contemporary examples.

Bowmen could be Maronite (http://warfare.meximas.com/WRG/Crusades-15-Maronite.htm)
See the painted window in the monastery church of St Denis in Paris (http://warfare2.netai.net/Medieval/St_Denis-Plate-50-Vol-1.htm) for crusaders.

I've got a lot of 10mm crusader figures based for WMH.

For the peasants I'd recomend AS5 - Saxon Levy/Peasant foot, ELM14 - Peasants mixed weapons with a few ELM12 - Irish Bonachs all mixed up for variety.  The figures are all excellent and personaly I'm not bothered by possible inconsistencies in peasant dress across a few centuries especially in 10mm.

For western archers you could use AS6 - Saxon Light Archers, he looks like he'd fit the description of 'grubby peasant type with some sort of bow', although for the crusader period the crossbow was the prefered distance weapon in western armies.
