Gentlemen and Gentlewomen of the forum,
It has come to that time when the football world cup is upon us again. For me this is several weeks of mild irritation and avoiding most news programs because they will invariably spend far too much time on a number of chaps getting excited about a spheroid.
Am I alone in my dismay? Do you too dread conversations beginning "did you see the match ..." or have you got the stats memorised? Have you started a football avoiding Pendraken project or have you covered you picture of Gustavus Adolphus with a world cup wall chart? Have you dug out your boxed set of Das Boot or are you setting your painting table in front of the TV?
I'm particularly interested in the contribution from those nations where football is known as "soccer".
can't wait! will watch every game (try and get some painting done during some of the more obscure matches).
I'm guessing I'm in a severe minority :D
What is this ... this ... footballworldcup of which you speak?
I shall be watching it and trying to paint as well, though with the time differences involved I think I shall miss some of it
I'm not a big football fan, but I do like the World Cup, mainly because the skill level is generally high , and there are usually some really good matches.
I'll catch the games I can, but won't be aiming to stay up extra late to watch them - though my wife ( who has always been more of a football fan ) seems to be keen to watch matches, she even stayed up to match the second part of the first half of last night's weather affected game, though the main outcome of that seems to be desire to bury Adrain Chiles in a large hole!
Don't think I'll be watching many (if any) of the live games...The highlights will do for me.
Probably listen to some of it, on the radio, as I drift off to sleep.
Might watch the final depending on what time it's on...And depending on who's playing.
Cheers - Phil
Football..... (:|.... it's not that I'm unfit, it's just that I need more than a field to exercise in, e.g. a mountain or three.
My wife will watch more than me I'm sure. Frankly the first round matches I find rather boring; for me it gets more interesting in the knock-out stages.
Neither Vanuatu nor Samoa made it out the group stages, so I'll have to buy a new shirt for the school sweepstake!
I'll watch it if it happens to be on the TV when I'm in front of it. I'll more likely watch a game involving Argentina as I got them in the works sweepstakes.
Also...Brazilian ladies...

I might catch the odd game. My wife and I have an agreement, I don't make her watch a lot of football and she doesn't make me watch soaps.
Maybe some of the final games.
Mind you, i usually say that and end up watching Not a single one. ;D
Does the fact that I only realised a few days ago that THIS world cup is in Brazil and not Qatar and that the hoo-ha is about an event eight years off indicate my level of interest?
Or just your age :d :)

Old enough to know better than to waste time watching football, you mean? :P ;D ;D
I'm going to try and get a few early finishes from work and catch some of the games. I can't see far beyond a Brazil win, playing at home in a climate they're used to. I think the European teams are going to struggle in the heat and humidity.
Skiving off work to watch the football? Don't let the boss catch you! (Adele, that is!) ;D
I'm bored with the whole thing already.
My local cinema is showing films fro the ladies when the footie is on. So my choices seem to be football or chick flick.
:(

Chick Flick every time. There again, I have a Cineworld Unlimited card and am not averse to going off on my own to a chick flick at the best of times. My friends will tell you that I have no taste when it comes to movies and will watch pretty much any genre except horror.
I was wondering why the telly had gone all shy on the WC, then I realized that guess who had been beaten :d
Who was that? My team won the other night, I was supporting Italy :D
A Geordie mate of mine once told "You Jocks are lucky B*ST*RDS, you get two teams in the World Cup, Scotland and anyone else who's playing England!"
Wouldn't be so funny if it weren't true.
Quoteyou get two teams
really :-\ isn't it just one :D
Reading this thread -late I know but I've been on me hols- I've just found out the meaning of apathy. I will watch all of the big team games and some of the smaller ones as well for the next three weeks as I have done every four years since the glory days of 1966. So is my son and even Ma Subs is slowly coming round to our way of thinking. Mind you, in her defence, she will always watch an England game.
You lot. :o :o ;)
Have to admit, I've already seen more than I was expecting to.
Of my 'four teams with the best chance to win' before the competition started, I've only been really impressed by Germany.
Brazil & Argentina were OK, but not as good as I thought they'd be......Spain ?.....Oh dear. oh dear ! (Well, I suppose they lost their first game last time and then went on to win...Be surprised if they repeat that !)
Holland though !.....Blimey ! :-bd

Careful Phil, I know lots of people from the Netherlands that would get irate at you calling them Holland
So ... this football thing .... has it started yet?

Apologies if that's a real "No-No" to our friends over there. :-[

Not properly, I.

He needed that talk from a Netherlandish Uncle.
Only managed to catch one game so far - Greece getting rightfully stuffed by the Columbians. Wouldn't write off the Spanish just yet, though.
Football - is that the one with the big "H" things at the end of the field, or the one with the tall black men with orange balls?

Nah, it's that thing with all that rolling on the field in utter agony when being touched by another player, only to get up and start sprinting a few seconds later :P
7 - 1 ??
Didn't see that one coming.......Great fun though !
Cheers - Phil
un-bloody-believable, never seen anything like it.
Great quote from Robbie Savage though :D
"The first half was most incredible half in World Cup history. Funny thing is Brazil would still hammer England!"

It's only a game, everyone.
Yeah but it's the only form of Nationalism the free world allows

as opposed to biting blood capsules to feign injury to exploit blood replacement rules :P

Is it the End of Football?
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Great result - shame it was the Germans, though. Now, if it had been the Dutch....
Loved every moment. Apart from drawing Russa & Greece in the office sweepstake :-\
B******cks, missed it - was watching the Tour de France.

Isn't there some sporting event going on in Scotland at the moment ?
You'd think the BBC would try and show some of that.

Apparently it's the SATs Olympics; you know, a lot of press fuss but in the end it counts for nothing.
