I note a distinct lack of war and weapon topics on the Sky History/documentary Channel. What is going on? One would have thought that the 70th anniversary of D Day and the 100th anniversary of WW1 would have inspired some decent coverage.
From what I can see these days that unless there were aliens from outer space involved in D-Day then they wont be interested
I have often thought it should be renamed the Aliens Channel
Best thing on history channel is 'Vikings', been wanting to see it for ages and so far it's living up to the hype!
I hesitate to ask this, not having Sky but how historical is 'Vikings'?
It's pretty good Dan, it's got a lot of historical references with shieldwalls, hierarchy, norse god worship, and the like, plus the main character is likeable and believable. It's going to be a slow burner (which I had heard) but I think its certainly worth watching!
I have to say that I really enjoyed the series dubbed from Russian (Soviet Storm) about the tank battles on the Eastern Front. The use of simulated imagery inspired a quite few copy cat games in 6mm and 10mm.
Yes, they form shieldwalls before battle in Vikings. But then what usually happens is that, someone shouts charge and then they run at each other in a huge disorganised mob. Some of the costumes seem to be based on Mad Max rather than actual Viking clothes. And the chrononology is just a joke.
But it is first class entertainment.
The best depiction of a shield wall I've seen was in one of the very early sequences from Rome (series 1) the legionaries are all in proper ranks and files, with rear ranks holding the harness of the man in front to give hime support and make sure he doesn't run then on a whistle command the whole front line rotates back and a fresh front line steps up to fight.
It might not be what actually happened but it had an authentic look, you could actually believe that a Roman Legion would fight in that sort of highly diciplined fashion.
Then Titus Pullo gets excited and jumps out of line for a bit of heroic single handed mayhem, for which he is subsequently flogged!
But it was a bit spoiled by the shields being the wrong shape for Caesar's legions - I need to get out more!
Thanks for reminding me......
Must be well over 2 years ago, I bought some box sets for a fiver each, which I assume were by the History channel.
"The Romans"......Watched that....."The Vikings"....Still shrink wrapped....and the Barbarians......
Haven't got around to watching the last two. :-[

When I used to have Sky I was quite when the Military History Channel first appeared, until it became obvious that 90% was going to be devoted to World War II.
My Wife say's I should know who won WW2 by now the Nazis with Alien help ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Seems like Saturday night television - it reflects the tastes of the people who watch it. Any serious media will eventually be subverted by the ratings police.
Iron Sky was a documentary ... who knew! ;D ;D ;D
I am waiting for the episode where they travel across a wide icy expanse to an alien spaceship, find loads of storage lockers, and when opened they find the ghost of Hitler planning to subvert the American Government
