Title: quick way to paint union troops
Post by: petercooman on 30 May 2014, 06:16:41 PM
Anybody have a quick way to get a tabletop standard paintjob on union troopers? I've hit the wall with these, as they take too long the way i do them, and i really want to progress with these guys.

THis is how i paint them:

But it feels like ages untill i get them finished, and i lost heart with the second regiment  =)

Inspire me!!

Flat colour, ink wash black, highlight with base then flesh (wash optional). Rifles and brown (sepia ink) and gun metal. Piping optional. Black, then white. Add flags.

Try breaking up into smaller batches (says a man who paints 140 Franco Prussians at a go) or have a different 'REWARD' unit to do after each batch (skirmishers/cavalry/general/artillery/another army).

Spray union blue, dot on lighter for the trousers, stripe brown for rifle, stripe metallic for barrel, pick out face & hands, cartridge box/blanket, big wash of something brown ish or maybe black, done.

Base as normal and they should pop ok :)

I've got about 200 union troops to do and my method will involve basing the lot then an army painter ultramarine blue spray, then I'll dot in the faces and hands, paint the trousers with a lighter blue, gun and satchel black, silver on bayonets, then an army painter strong tone wash. They will be fit for the table after a quick touch up.

I recently painted several hundred Union troops at a go.  Sprayed the whole lot in dark blue to start with but there's no quick way to add the detail.

The problem I have with union is seeing th detail on dark blue. Same with Prussians

Well i have made some progress, busy with the second batch of 30 models and a commander, but going very slow.

Well at least it's better than nothing. If i finish this batch i'll have about 100 done, and still the same number left to do.

And then the confederates...  :'(

Confederates are easier - Spray gray, wash darker gray.

Mostly myth.  Uniforms weren't as much of a problem as people think.

So i got some progress on these chaps! Applying the grass and such and took a quick picture! I think i can pass these off as tabletop worthy!
