Title: Register of woodcuts of Ottomans by Melchior Lorck, 1570-83
Post by: Druzhina on 20 May 2014, 11:45:13 AM
The woodcuts of Ottomans by Melchior Lorck (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/Melchior_Lorck.htm) were made in 1570-83, but 1st published (postumously) in 1626. The British Library has a nearly complete set as loose leaves, which are only known by their description e.g:
A knight on horseback (A Delli) (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/A_knight_on_horseback.htm)
A soldier holding a lance by Melchior Lorck (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/A_soldier_holding_a_lance.htm)
A cavalry member by Melchior Lorck (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/A_cavalry_member.htm)
A rider with a large double banner (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/A_rider_with_a_large_double_banner.htm)
A soldier wearing a helmet by Melchior Lorck (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/A_soldier_wearing_a_helmet.htm)
A soldier walking to right by Melchior Lorck (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/A_soldier_walking_to_right.htm)
or by the figure numbers that they appear as in modern publications.
The BnF has an intact 1646 edition with a 3 page register of plate descriptions in German (http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k103305t.image.f5). But the numbers on these don't correspond to the order the plates appear in the book, presumably because Melchior Lorck died with the project unfinished.  This edition includes a couple of plates without the usual monograms or dates:
Musketeer by Melchior Lorck? (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/Musketeer.htm) &
Standards by Melchior Lorck? (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/Standards.htm) which may not be by Melchior Lorck.

There appears to be some very useful information in the register. I have typed my interpretation of some of the register of Melchior Lorck plates (http://warfare2.likamva.in/Ottoman/MelchiorLorck/Register.htm). Are there other copies of this register without blotches? Is there a list which matches these descriptions with the plates? A translation into English or someone willing to do this?

Dellis seem to be the only pike and shot light cavalry who carried a greater overall weight than many heavies!

Thanks for the pictures.
