Title: Early Irish horse?
Post by: irregularwars on 17 May 2014, 04:41:43 PM
Can anyone offer any suggestions for early medieval mounted Irish miniatures?

By early med. I mean c. AD 500 but as the Irish seem to have been fairly conservative in dress, I might be able to make do with anything designed for the 500 years either side of that if suitable.

Not sure if such a thing exists at all, but I'm looking for at least two different poses if I follow this path (a mounted unit for my Irish Dux Bellorum army).

Would Techno's forthcoming Pictish horsemen be suitable? Are there photos about?

As a long shot, what about the Numidian horse for the Carthaginian range?

Cheers!

A little later than you're interested in but I'm guessing not much would have changed on the 200 years in between.

The unarmoured guy in ELM20 in the medieval range might do though the one in chain is probably too well armoured.

Dacian light cavalry AD4.

slightly oval shield and spear with cloak. Might be worth a look. Wouldn't take much filing to make shield round if required. Only one pose though

Also, the Myrddin figure from the Arthurian Personalities in the Late Roman range would make a good Irish King.

Anyone able to say whether that pack has any other unarmoured poses?

There aren't many contemporary images of Irish horsemen. Here are 2:

Stearing the horse with a stick seems traditional.
