Excellent report. The FPW always seems to provide spectacular games.

Fantastic!  We played this about three and a half years ago using Bernie's TTLGB rules, and had every bit as much fun as you seem to have had. Great looking table  :-bd :-bd

Looking good! Wish I finally was so far with my FPW project...
I'm building two French corps in 6mm and a Prussian and together with five friends we should cover the whole battle as well (if we ever get it all done...), looking forward to getting it done but honestly there's a constant stream of new project always getting in between (somehow they all seem to be in 10mm...  :-\ )
The battlefield in my opnion is one of the best preserved on the continent. I visited it for the last time about 4 years ago but we're planning to get back there this summer; Always a joy to roam through the valley and read all the markers and monuments!  :)

I agree entirely, it is a great field.  You will also be lucky as, for the first time in many years, there is now a museum open in Gravelotte itself!  It only opened a couple of weeks ago, and commemorates the occupation as well as the battle, but it should be worth a visit, in a rather über modern sort of way. Hope to get down there myself later this year.  Hope you have a great time.

Thanks Mollinary!
I was already wondering if the museum was ever to re-open again... up till now we always stood at the old museum door hoping it was finally open and of course we were always disappointed...
For those interested; if you're ever near Sedan be sure to visit Bazeilles and the Maison de la dernière cartouches; a small museum but with some stunning artefacts and history and a very helpfull proprietor. What he lacks in his knowledge of the English language (or any other language but French I suspect) he surely makes up for with his enthusiasm.
Also the ossuaire on the local cemetery is worth a visit. You can actually see the partly mummified corpses of the French soldiers that died around Bazeilles lying there. A grizzly but also touching sight; bones sticking out of a pair of shoes with their white gaiters still on, mummified corpses rolled in their greatcoats etc. How close did you want to get to the real thing...

I've had the fortune to do that too Ace, brilliantly sobering.

Great looking battle, Freidland. And the Kalistra terrain works well. I've often wondered how much European history would have changed if Bazaine had marched the Imperial Guard and the entire reserve artillery to his extreme right flank when first asked for support. Who knows?
When you realise we're all mad, life makes a lot more sense.

Don't forget the museum in Worth, excellent; also there used to be one near Rezonville but it was closed when I was there in 2004.
Don't buy your daughters a pony, buy them heroin instead, its cheaper and ultimately less addictive.
