Culloden battlefield housing development

The historic Culloden battlefield where soldiers fought for their country and lost their lives is under threat with a proposed housing development within 400 metres of the historic location.

I am a bit "conflicted" about this one.  Are we saying we need an exclusion zone around all battlefields? And if so, how big would be adequate?  Or are we objecting to building on grave pits?   If the former, I am not sure it is practical, or necessary. If the latter I could see the point of an objection, but would like to know more about developers' plans (if any!) as to how to deal with the pits. If they were to be investigated sensitively by archaeologists, and remains re-interred respectfully in a new marked site, then I think I would still not object.  After all, if we dig up Richard III!?!

I was at Culloden many years ago, and I think I remember a road already  crossing through the miiddle of the battlefield...Not sure if a housing estate will make any difference.

He was torn from the country he loved, forced into exile, but Prince Stuart has returned. There were more Scots in the Government army that day FSN than were standing with the Prince, it was the last gasp of a civil war that started in 1640. The road was pushed through in the 19th century, many remains were found and reinterred without fuss. To be honest the visitor centre (brilliant inside but an eyesore outside) and the sanitised battlefield, all gravel tracks and signs, has done more to deface the site than any nearby housing estate could ever do. I remember the battlefield from years ago (after the forest had been cleared). On a cold sleety day you could imagine yourself there, as my ancestors were, it had real atmosphere, now they've turned it into a quasi-Disneyland, its horrible. Sorry, your petition is well intentioned but I for one won't be signing it, the damage has been done already.

I remember seeing one film cant remember the title but it had a dear or stage in it and Brian Blessed was in it

The one bit I remember was Prince Charlie going through the Scottish troops talking to the men and after he left him turning to his general and saying " I do not understand a word they are saying , why do we have to have such peasants in our army"..something like that anyway

Have to agree with Mollinary. History's too dam' widespread to go preserving battlefields as museums.

On second thoughts if Jennifer got her kit off   and Sam L J kicked some ass with a niblick I'd quite happily see history rewritten hollywood style. However I'd draw the line at Cruise being in it unless they could have his character lobotomised... however quite clearly he has already had that done!
