I dont trim the figure bases, i just put the basing material (pummice) up to the edge then cover with paint and a bit of field grass around the fig base to hide it

Sorry for the late reply, my internet service along with my aging laptop have been on a go slow recently.

Better late than never 

So, you glue the figs to the base before adding the pummice... 
I have to try that on my next army!
