Does one mix the Gaesatae in with the rest, field them as the front rank, or use the as seperate units? And, yes, I am aware that they were non-tribal mercs.

Depends which rules you are using, for some they are seen as separate unit, other rules they are a booster and in others they just mix in the mob!!!

What does reality have to say on the subject?

At Telamon and Clastidium they were an allied force of up to 30k, under their own leaders, so would be separate units.

One of the ancient authors, forget who at the moment, mentions Gauls fighting naked in similar fashion to the Gaesatae. These would presumably fight as part of a tribal unit so would be either an upgrade to the unit concerned or simply a bit of local colour depending how many there were.
There are 100 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who can work from incomplete data

OK, then, I'll mix 'em in on your authority.

I tend to mix them in as the front rank of about 50% of the bases

That way they can be spread out as a front rank stiffening, be collected together as an elite force or lost in the mob.

Then again I play Impetus so that's big bases with lots of figs - may not work so well with DBx/WM style basing  :-\
