Thanks again. I;m trying to keep a running commentary on the Polish but I think some of the new Mongols will sidetrack me every so often. On top of finishing the first Mongol unit -just needs the bases sorting- I have another unit of Polish cavalry two-thirds finished and the start of a unit of levy infantry. Only 210 infantry and another 45 cavalry to go for the Polish after that, although one of the Polish cavalry units will be the Knights Templar. There were a total of 500 at the battle of Liegnitz but I am using a bit of wargaming license here in doing the whole unit as cavalry even though the reality was that there were only 88 mounted men, the rest were  infantry of varying types but it will look good and that's the point.

If anyone is interested in the contemporary Polish nobility shield info I have, just PM me with an email address and I will send you a copy as a Word file.

Excellent, Subedai. Do I get the impression the first and last are related?

Not to my knowledge. If you have a quick gander at the blog, I've written a small, introductory laymans piece (I'm the layman by the way) on Polish heraldry. It's different to western Europe in a number of interesting ways...not least that it's a lot easier to paint!  :)

As we are only allowed two pics in the competition I thought I'd put a few more here of the Templar base I have painted. My units are in 3's and the other two bases -of guest knights and their sergeants- will be along on the next bus.

and from the other, less shielded so less glamorous side...

Cheers for that, Kev. I always paint my own shields -some good, some not so. That's one of the good thing about Polish heraldry of the time, no quartering, no bars -sinister or otherwise. I would really hate to try and paint an English, French or German quartered shield with different charges in each quarter in 10mm. Some of the guest knights have quartered but they are all plain (that's why I chose them). I mean, my 25mm lions on an ECW standard were once described as being more like growling rats.
