Just seen that Danish TV is making a series based on this period

If I were creating Pendraken I wouldn't mess about with Romans and  Mongols  I would have started with Centurions , eight o'clock, Day One!

Well, Barking is in Essex, erudite could be a two-part epoxy resin, which leaves "knowledgeable" - the ability to drive a taxi around London. It all makes sense now.  :P
