Hello All,
Anyone playing To The Last Gaiter Button out there?
Few questions:
1. is there a fallback move?  I see you can fall back from melee but nothing in the rules about simply retiring a square to keep the enemy at a distance.
2. Can you assault to a square that is cornered to you?  Seems odd that you'd have to move forward one turn, turn to face the square the next, then assault on the 3rd turn.  Why not just move corner to corner in the assault.
3. Moral...is there divisional moral or just Corps.  Seems odd that you'd have to test an entire corps if one division is battered but the other is fresh.

Thanks for any help that can be offered.

Hi Dedonta,

This is a good place to ask, as Bernie, the author, is often on this forum.  But if he is not along shortly, you might like to look at the Yahoo Group for Realtime Wargames ,and ask there. There is also a link to the website they established a few months ago, which might be another route.  I would try and help, but might only serve to confuse, as my rules are in store at present awaiting a house move.  The only thing I would say is that I'd be very surprised if you can assault a corner, as it goes against the whole mechanics of the rule set.  It takes some getting used to, but I have always rationalised it as a way of removing a lot of "gamey" stuff done by the more rapacious of our brethren. It forces you to plan out your attacks, which I assume are brigade and division level, not individual battalions, and these formation cannot pirouette about on a field with the ease that wargamers assume.   And the disadvantage which you face in aligning your attack is matched by the difficulties your opponent faces in moving troops to cover his flank. This is a real plus in the rules for me, as it forces you to make proper provision for your flanks in a way most rules don't . I ope you end up enjoying them as much as I do.

See below for my comments/answers to The To The Last Gaiter Button


1.  Can you withdraw in your movement from a square...I see you can during an assault, but nothing about regular movement.

Answer: not in regular movement - keeping your troops in column gives them this flexibility or use light troops to hold positions you want to abandon, but once your have created your battle line you have to keep it as happened historically.

2.  Can you assault diagonally?  If not...seems odd that if you are across corners from one another, that you'd have to move forward one turn, turn to your flank on the next turn, then on the third turn assault.

Answer: No - combat is to the side of the square, again you can move a column into a flanking square and deploy facing the outflanked enemy held base - this again reinforces the importance of reserves held in column - so again once deployed they are good facing the enemy, but do not have the manoeuvrability of your reserves 

3.  Is moral tested per division or corps?  If its Corps, aren't you at a significant disadvantage if one division is battered badly and the other is completely fresh?

Answer: We discussed this with the playtesters when we were doing the design - they liked the simplicity of doing this just for corps - rather than having to monitor which units belong to which division and also pointed out that as playing corps commanders if one div has been badly hurt, this would impact on how a corps commander would use his other division(s) - They would be used as a rearguard to cover a retreat or be used to form the basis of the pursuit force if likely to win. If you want to do separate morale for the component divisions give it a go, but if both Prussian or for the French all three divisions have bad morale then up the battlefield losses.

While I got you I have a couple other questions
1. Marking Casualties...I see on the chart on page 44 it appears that the officer comes off as a casualty at CE 3...is that true.  I'm a bit confused because the paragraph that follows that chart says to remove them as the defender sees fit...only placing a hit on an officer if everything else has already taken a hit that fire phase.  And then is only removed on a roll of 1 on a D6.

2. When a coloumn moves a square and deploys into line...can it face in any direction?

3. Light infantry like Chasseurs & Jagers have not modifiers to be fired at?  Just wondering, as you said to use them to screen units that need to fall back.

Defender chooses which unit to take the losses. Remember the distinction between officer with a unit and the commander bases (brig, div, corps) who if carry out heroic acts have a chance of taking losses if units they are with take losses

But do it from cover with the terrain modifier - if do it in the open they get nothing
