Hi, I've seen a few posts on people sculpting their own figures, what is the process ? I've always wanted to know how figures are made from conception to the finished product, always fascinated me .

Hi Paul.

A VERY quick run down on making a figure from scratch would go something along these lines.......

At this scale......You start with a fine wire frame....Using either fine brass braid or fine fuse wire.
Bend it into the pose you want.
Do a 'rough' skinning for parts of the body such as calves, thighs, chest and head.....Allow to set.
Then you begin to bulk out and detail the model.

For the work various of Leon's designers do for Pendraken.... we tend to use 'dollies' that we've already made, as this speeds up the process...So we don't start completely from scratch for each model...We're putting putty on an already existing posed 'frame'.

There are a couple of 'how tos' somewhere on the forum (I know I've done one.... and so has Barbarian.)
I'll try and find them a bit later. ;)

Cheers - Phil

Thanks Phil, I've always wondered how it was done, very interesting, wish I had the skill to try it.

Hi Paul.

If you look in (open) the Archive section at the bottom of the forum's home page, you should be able to find the "Pendaken Sculpting Competion 2011".
If you look at the sub categories in that.....you should come across "A bit of advice from the pro's".....Which has a great bit of info from Clibby on the first page, which is very comprehensive.
There's also "Techno's WIP pics of 'Jim'"......Where I 'made up' and took photo's of 'Jim' as I went along to hopefully give folk a bit of an idea.
I made 'Jim' much larger than a normal 10mm figure, so it was easier to photo and see what was going on.

You'll soon realize that I had no particular thought as to what I was really trying to achieve at the start, as 'Jim' mutated and was corrected as I went along....But after all, he was supposed to be a Chaos beastie..so that was fairly appropriate. ;) ;D

Hope that helps.

Cheers - Phil.

Phil, thanks for that, I will take a look.

I would love to watch this in person from start to finish. Don't think I have the skills for this.

Phobos

Don“t know if it could be useful to you, but I can take photos of my next project, step by step if you want.

chalkie

Phobos that would be great, thanks.
