Damnitz 1866

Here are a few photos of a game we ran recently to test how well my Voice of the Guns rules would handle the 1866 war. The scenario envisaged a Prussian infantry division debouching from the north Bohemian mountains for the purpose of securing the small (and highly fictional) town of Damnitz, presently held by a single Austrian brigade. Each side's forces would be reinforced at regular intervals as their supports came up, until the town and its environs were held by two Austrian and one Saxon brigades.

The game resulted in a narrow win for the Prussians, although not before the Austrians had punched a neat hole in the Prussian left with a screaming charge by two battalion columns. The situation was only rescued for the Prussians by the fusilier battalion of the 3rd Grenadiers coming up in the nick of time and sending the whitecoats packing.

The terrain is, of course, Kalistra, and I have to say that, if you can get past the hexagons (and it's surprising how quickly they fade from consciousness in the heat of battle) it is a flexible, durable and versatile system.

They do mine too, Nik. My mate's solution is to use casino dice, which are bigger, heavier and made to much higher tolerances. Mind you, one has to be careful where you roll them - one reckless throw can demolish an entire brigade.

Excellent stuff! And for dice, what about the good old clear plastic chocolate box (those flash ones you get in European embassies)?

Yes we use casino dice as I was becoming frustrated at good games being ruined by unbalanced dice.

However casino and precision dice do land flat on Kallistra terrain everytime. Not cheap but why spend a fortune on figures and terrain but not the dice? The rules and gaming equipment is all part of the experience.

Here's a link to the cheaper precision dice. They might not look as pretty as casino but they are cheaper and almost as balanced.
