Hi

I am in the fortunate position of having people ask me what i want for my birthday, and naturally my first thought was wargames "stuff"

However, I am at a bit of a loss as to what to suggest!

To give you some idea I play socially very infrequently due to work and family commitments and when i do play it tends to be BKC or more recently Dux Bellorum in 10mm. I probably play solo once every week to 10 days. I am in the process of getting shot of my 15mm ww2 as I no longer use it and typically dont have the opportunity to play big 28mm games so no longer having anything in this scale.

My first thought was more 10mm but I have just ordered with Leon my French 100 years war army, and also have AWI armies to complete (for Maurice) and have half a Anglican League force to finish for AVBCW. In terms of rules i have of recent years tried Black Powder, Rules of Engagement, BKC, CWC, Secrets of the Third Reich, Force on Force and both Muskets and Toms and Maurice (beyond dabbling havent played either properly).

Any rules suggestions would have to suit solo and vs play.

As for books i have a shed load to read.......
Scenery and buildings.....I am anal, so i make my own.......

So what next, is there some forgotten ruleset or period that is worth investing time and money in (dont forget i already have a lot of lead to paint).......or have one if you got a bright idea to relight my gaming mojo please?

Cheers

" Nuts! "  is suitable both for solo, coop and head to head ( I didn't tried the last option)
Albie also had a good idea !

Hows about a bit of naval gaming?

Terrain, a lump of blue cloth.

Minis, well for the Battle of the River Plate, 4 ships, cost depends where you buy them, Mick Yarrow they'll cost about £3, GHQ about £40.

Rules well, depends on you really, but Victory at Sea are pretty solo friendly, cant remember what the others are like.

Well its a bit different.

Force on Force is good for solo play.

I've just started playing Square Bashing using 10mm. In the Army Book are two lists for right wing and left wing troops for a British Civil War set in 1919. The system lends itself to solo play, and this is how one of my regular opponents playtested the rules before playing me.

Have you got the Blessed Feathersones solo wargames volumes?

Also, I believe Games Workshop do some pre-painted figures that are getting people excited.

I recomend BKC, CWC or FWC.

GW does not do prepaints. Rackham did...

Craig,

Perhaps you need the rush of new period discoveries, followed by further research and the planning of miniature armies. You need a book to open up new areas of interest.

Here are some suggestions if you havnt sudied these areas before. I can recommend all of these books as being page turners; I've read all of them more than once, I can pretty well guarantee they will hold your interest and they all are far more surprising and than fiction ever can be.  There are more scholarly books out there and some with later research but these are the ones that grabbed my interest and I am still in the planning stage with nearly all of them.

The Thirty Years War by C.V. Wedgewood
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thirty-Years-Review-Books-Classics/dp/1590171462

An old classic and great starting point for learning about the war that virtually destroyed Europe. Catholics against Lutherans, Catholics against Calvinists, Franciscans against Jesuits, Bourbons against Hapsburgs, Spain against the Netherlands and the struggle to keep the Spanish road open, Spain against France, France against Austria, Denmark against Austria, Sweden against Austria.

VILLA and ZAPATA by Frank McLynn

Cannot understand why this is not a popular wargame period. WW1 weapons, loco-loco, and a general that repeatedly wins by carrying out cavalry charges.

Red Victory a History of the Russian Civil War 1918 – 1921 by W. Bruce Lincoln
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Red-Victory-History-Russian-1918-1921/dp/0306809095/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1367360028&sr=1-1&keywords=Red+Victory+a+History+of+the+Russian+Civil+War+1918+%E2%80%93+1921

The best starter book on the RCW I know of. This can be a dry subject, but this version gallops along mixing high level politics with the low butchery. I have gotta do this period.

The Last Valley by Martin Windrow
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Last-Valley-Vietnam-Military-Paperbacks/dp/0304366927/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1367360621&sr=1-1&keywords=The+Last+Valley

A very readable account of the French experience in Vietnam and their war against the Viet-Minh. I have a lead mountain in this one that I must finish soon.

Hope this inspires you to look at something different  :)

Cheers
