Sound Effects

Hi All,

My first post and I hope one that doesn't seem too odd...

Occasionally, I have thought about how I could enhance the atmosphere of a game by adding some 'sounds of battle'  to match the period being fought. As I mostly solo game, at present just having the radio/stereo is only slightly better than the sound of dice rolling. I thought about creating a background 'soundtrack' of musket volleys, beating drums, the rattle of machine guns, thump of artillery, tracks turning -I'm sure you get the idea-would help set the scene and enable one to become lost in the game being played and imaginations to run.

Is this concept something totally alien to others ? Or does anyone have any suggestions/links from where war/battle sounds effects can be easily obtained.

Thanks for anyone's thoughts,

Tim

Here's a site with a few on Husaria...

Plenty more sites of a similar nature if you google 'battle sound effects mp3'.

Mmm, I'd go for a series of contemporary military music. Tho' I suppose for ancients ad medieval it wouldn't really be worth playing (I don't suppose Gregorian chant would work on a crusades battlefield!).

For SYW or AWI I would suggest some of the Barry Lyndon soundtrack.

For a minute there I thought you meant making your own machine gun sounds, artillery whistles and screaming stuka noises.... all of which would have meant you'll fit in well on this forum as were all a bit hatstand :D 8-} :O)
I don't think my wife likes me very much, when I had a heart attack she wrote for an ambulance.

You'd go crazy after hearing the Hohenfriedberger march (and Mozart's rip-off from Idomeneo) twenty times!

I agree with FK. Great as a novelty; pure bloody murder after a few repetitions.  :'(

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. The British Grenadiers music is particularly stirring stuff !

And that was my immediate thought too... 8-}

Everyone knows you get more hits if you add sound effects  ;)

I always thought it was how wildly and aggressively you threw the dice!

Throwing the dice harder makes a louder noise = sound effect = more hits.

It is all part of the "influence-the-game" conspiracy!

Trouble with throwing the dice agressively is keeping them on the table. I've known players who spent half the game chasing dice across the hall. Some of them needed three or four attempts to get a usable result on an eight by six board....  ~X(

I have a house rule: if the dice jump out of the box in which they are to be thrown, they are re-rolled at a 1-pip penalty.
