While I don't know what answer was received in this case, I've seen references to the last use of regimental colours in action (across the British Army as a whole) being in the 1st Boer War ie pre-Sudan with occasional subsequent use of flags for recognition purposes e.g. 1900 Peking operations.

Sadly, I have been told by the regimental museum that they no longer carried colours.
