I think one of the great strengths of BKCII is that you can tweak the rules slightly to suit a specific scenario. Pete also has a few optional rules in both the 1st and 2nd editions, the optional 'hits stay on' being one of them.

It was nice to play something a bit different for a change. I must admit I like the versatility of the Italians; I can use them from the SCW, through North and East Africa, the Balkans, France 1940, Russia and finally Sicily and Italy 1943 :). They also get used in the AVBCW from time-to-time and I'm also thinking of a 'what if?' action as part of Operation Seelowe.
