I thought the punchline was going to be something to do with a U-Boat

A German clockmaker, approaching the end of a long and distinguished career, decides to leave a perfect example of his art to the world. He researches in museums, corresponds with experts, studies his notes, travels extensively in Switzerland and Japan, and eventually produces the clock that Bach would have written if he'd been in the business: it keeps perfect time, could survive a minor military attack, has a minimalist elegance that pleases the eye every time one looks at it, needs winding once every three hundred years.

One problem, however; it goes "tick...tick...tick" instead of "tick...tock" as a clock is expected to. Our worthy chronosmith therefore strips it down, analyses the parts, redesigns a few bits, discusses the problem with other masters of his art; then he reassembles it.

"tick...tick...tick...."

At length he realises that he's approaching the problem the wrong way. He gets father's old uniform out of mothballs, puts the clock on the table, shines a light in its face, lights a cigarette, and says in a world-weary voice "You would be wise to cooperate, my friend. We have ways of making you tock."
