Why is there a "Near East" but no "Near West" (that I know of)?

We have an "Up North" "Down South" "Out West" but a "Down East" (which should be "In East" to improve the symmetry)?

Our "Mid West" is much more north than west and is almost entirely east of the Mississippi River.

You are where you were born even if you can't speak the language or find it on a map. Possibly it is where you were conceived but you might not be privy to that information. Using the last, I'm from Connecticut (and no, I do not speak the language but know it is "In East").

£90 for a tyre ys not too awful.

Maybe there is in ... say ... Turkey or one of the Stans. Here in the UK, there is nothing west of us bar a big, cold ocean.

Your "Out West" is more of a cultural than a geographic description; stetsons, cow herding, random gun deaths, etc. It's not actually what's in the West, it's somewhere John Wayne would fit in. I suspect few would include Alsaka as being "Out West".

(We don't have an "Out West" here ... we say "Wales".)

Slightly surprised they covered your "pre-existing condition" as it were. Insurance usually doesn't.

In my experience all of the roadside assistance services are happy to let you join any time. Even when broken down at the side of the road .... for a little extra.

Well, there is Ireland (see below)

We also have the "Far West" which dips its toes in the Pacific. Interestingly the "Far East" is west of our "Far West" - I think this has been covered by others in this thread, however.

:) Which, naturally, makes Ireland your "Far West".

An Australian Defense Minister (in)famously pointed out that Indonesia may be in the Far East to a lot of countries but to Australia it was the Near North

Hi

When I lived in Fulham, London, going 'Up West' meant going to London's 'West End' even though technically it was ENE from Fulham. Go figure.

Cheers Paul
