Pardon my newbie knowledge on the subject matter, but what is the general paint scheme adopted by folks for these?  I imagine there may be some preserved specimen photo somewhere on the net, but how authentic would that be?  Also, are folks using the shield that comes with the Pendraken castings?  What photos I have seen of them do not include a gun shield of the size that comes with the minis.  The one piece casting looks more the point to me.  Thanks for any help, my first batch of these figs has arrived....so be prepared for more of these questions!   John Svensson

Its a lovely casting but unfortunately of the wrong mitrailleuse, its the Montigny ('parish pump' lever on back of barrel) and not the Reffey which had a crank (no wisecracks from the back thank you messrs Mollinary and Lemney please). The colour is dark green, the shield wasn't fitted during the Imperial phase of the war.
BTW have you seen the Mitrailleuse animations on youtube ?

Doh.....how could they ere between the Montigny and the Reffey?   I should have noted that though.  Anyone remove the offending casting and fit the crank?  I think that would be over the top for any of my potential opponents knowledge of these.  Thanks.  John

So Cam, oh great guru of the coughing death!  Does thy gaze see as far as the ranges of the evil Magister Militum?  Does  their vile offering please  thee more than the product of the sweat of the brow of the honest craftsmen who are Pendraken?  We should be told!

I assembled mine without gun shields, and ne'er cast a glance at Magister Militum, afer seeing their prices! Just ignore the fact mine are on the wrong colour carriages and we'll say nothing of it!

Ninety per cent of mine are Pendraken, without the shield, but I have a couple of MMs, which I think are illustrated on their web site. They look quite different.

The Pendraken ones are beautifully cast, I wouldn't go elsewhere, also the somewhat recondite point re the lever vs crank does allow you to swank in front of those less well informed.

Thanks for the answers guys...I don't know, that MM version is looking pretty good    but since Pendraken is on hand, that is what I'm going with!
A few on-line photos did establish the fact that the barrel was brass, so that is a plus.  Green it is on the rest of the frame and spokes.

The Mitrailleuse was deployed as part of the French artillery and i'd therefore suggest they were painted in accordance with their basic colour scheme;

Woodwork = olive green
Metal = black

A sound suggestion...the web photos are not to be trusted.  The museum piece in Germany is "lime green" with exposed brass for the gun, others have verdigree covering the brass.  There should have been an Alexander Gardner at Gravelotte, and with color film plates!

Not brass John, bronze (hence verdigris).

What I mean is the barrel was bronze, there are some brass fittings eg handles but the steel barrels were encased in bronze.
