Test Union speed painting

Hi guys,

If I'm going to do ACW as a project, I'm going to have to get them on table with minimum time spent on the painting table. This means a bit of a come down from the standards of my AWI stuff. I'm not sure about this at all because the figures are pretty nice and I don't like not doing them justice.

These chaps were done in a fairly short time, although I now see that I forgot to do the metal work.



Thoughts?

For a quick paint job, those look terrific to me.
En masse on the table they'll look wonderful.

They look good to me. You may want to try giving the dark blue a good dry brushing. I find that helps to bring out all the detail.

I undercoated these in Brown as I thought they were Reb's at first, but will do any more Union from a black undercoat so I can leave the equipment. Painting black over dark blue just doesn't show it up at all!

Thanks for the comments, I guess I will paint the rest of the "unit", another 9 bases to see how long it takes me using this quick and nasty approach.

A good point you've made here. I'm spending an hour a figure painting 10mm up at the moment. But time is in short supply. I don't have any advice, but it sure has made me think about my painting methods.

Have you tried the Magic Wash method yet? Would do those troops in half the time without the dry-brushing malarkey.

I am currently painting some Sung Chinese archers and spearmen. There are 8 different colours on each and by using the Wash at the end I can turn out 10 in an hour -not including undercoat or varnish of course.

I, myself, have used Army Painter stain varnish (or whatever it is, they call it) in the past, actually on Pendraken WW2, to be honest. It is a time saver and can produce some good results. Perfect for getting troops from off the painting table and into games quick.
