Yes, in a tangential way of thinking, the problem of effectively basing without them being up to their waists in base material has been gently meandering through my mind over the last couple of days. My idea was to base them on thin pieces of cereal packet card before sticking them down to the proper basing and then use my Saharan sand (very fine grit) sand and pva mix to level it all off. Don't know if it would work but...

I was going to stick one strip of figures directly onto self-adhesive magnetic tape of and then use filler/PVA/paint mix for the ground around them.

I've now switched to standard 2mm MDF bases with ~2 strips stuck on with PVA. I'll almost certainly use filler/PVA mix unless a better alternative suggests itself.
