Just to throw in a random bit of trivia, out of all the different colour components in light, the blue rays can penetrate water the furthest, hence why the sea is blue.  Green is the second furthest to penetrate, giving a greeny tint as well.

I've just done a bit of Googling, and the white, red wavelengths are absorbed, while the green and blue penetrate and are reflected.  The water has to be at least 3 metres deep for this to work though apparently (I had a figure of 3ft in my head for some reason!).

Best thing to do to work it out? As i based it on the river at the start of the film Zulu I should Watch Zulu and have a look at the river and copy whether it's brown, White it blue. Then whatever it is I'll mix in with the next coats of varnish.

I must say I'm  surprised at how much you guys put into this answer. I'm wrestling over, how many riffles NNC have per unit of 10, how many men in a platoon, how many platoons in a company, what riffles did the mounted Dragoons use, how many Zulu squads on a table compaird to Brits, stat lines etc.

Oh, I put together some British yesterday... Looking smart!
