Welcome aboard.

For Elizabeth's men I don't know if many specific colours are known, in John Derrick's The Image of Irelande the troops seem to carry simple St. George's cross flags

Irish troops didn't really have colours, their organisation not really following a continental system. However if you are doing O'Neill's army, it was noted that he did give his companies drums and colours (as he made his army more like that of the English), but there aren't any records of what they were as far as I know. Religious or family symbols are likely candidates, O'Neills Bloody Red Hand for example. Possibily you could give the Papal nuncio's banner as an army standard. The Kinsale battle map shows flags with white fields and red saltires, it isn't clear wheather these are St. Patrick's cross or Spanish ragged crosses.
It was also noted that the Irish sometimes went into battle with colours previously taken from English regiments at engagements like the Yellow Ford.

are illustrated a couple of flags visible in the Erne fords print

Ian Heath's Armies of the Sixteenth Century contains pretty much all the info there is on the Irish, and plenty on the English , having flag info for both.

Hi Rosie3. Welcome to the forum.

The best source for English standards is George Gush's Renaissance Armies 1480-1650. It was published by Patrick Stephens Ltd in 1975, so I'm not sure it's still in print. Your local library may be able to get hold of a copy for you.

Good luck with your project - sounds fascinating.

There's some English flags in this article; http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_armies_eng.html

Actually this and the Irish one appear to be by George Gush; are they like his book?

They formed the basis of his book, Clib. They originally appeared in the Airfix Magazine.

Hi everyone                  Have done quite a lot research and come up with some answers. In O`Niells Irish Army he was able to supply some of his men with pike and guns from the Spanish, and equiped what where Galowglas and the Bonnachts with the pike and muskets! So the Irish army are not now so medieval in the way they could fight against the English, although they could still revert to guerilla tactics (such as hit and run).Overall it is making for an interesting project, although Iam a little short on filling the Irish ranks with proper figures but will sacrifice a little here and there. Cheers for now Phil
