Duke Speedy of Leighton

Just a small division I started over Easter holidays, had so much on since it's taken ages to get based.

Close up of the infantry.

Gen Clerambault, French cavalry general.

And the missing dragoons from 3rd Cavalry Brigade.

I know Mollinary, shocking aren't they! French flags don't have gold braiding - but they're cast that way, and I know there are one too many battle honours on the dragoons...  ;D 8) :P

5th and 8th Dragoons, eh.   Mmmmmm.  So is the Flag for the 5th or for the 8th, that is the question?

For the 5th the Honours would be: WATTIGNIES 1793, ARCOLE 1796, AUSTERLITZ 1805, EYLAU 1806 AND CRAONE 1814.

For the 8th: CASTIGLIONE 1796, RIVOLI 1797, MARENGO 1800, AUSTERLITZ 1805 AND HEILSBERG 1807.

So, five honours each, so what would you add as a sixth - WATERLOO 1815 would seem to be a good choice ;D!!??   By the way, they should have braiding for this period, honest!   ;)

I take it that by "braided" you're talking about fringing? All the illustrations I've seen show French standards with gold fringing - much like the later Napoleonic standards.

Hertsblue,

Absolutely right, as far as I can see (based on photos of some of these flags which survived) both infantry and cavalry flags have gold fringing for this period.

;D*Tsk* it was meant to be a joke after all the Saxon standards debates!  ;D
Takes whole thread with pinch of salt!
Seriously - Thanks for the feedback. French standards - right pain to paint, bees at 10mm scales - seriously! I  started them before I found Pendraken.Vaubanner and all the other great links from here, so had to carry on for 'consistancy'.  8)
Would you believe me if I said there was a thin gold fringe in the infantry standards?  ;)

Nah, thought not...   :P

Lemmey,

I took it as a joke, but never knowingly miss the opportunity to show off!!!!! ;D    The battle honours as listed are correct, according to Pierre Charrie's Drapeaux et Etandards du XIXieme siecle, which a French colleague has been kind enough to lend me.  I think he says you only need the bees for the Imperial Guard!  On your question, of course, I believe everything you post implicitly! :-\

LOL! Coincidently - I base my standards from the Great Friekorp 15 book on the Maximillian Adventure, clearest description I've ever seen of French standards!
