The book is quite dark at times.  Some quite unpleasant things go on like being captured and nearly eaten by spiders, Bilbo meeting Gollum and cheating him out of the the ring, lots of misery and cold in the mountains etc.  It's certainly not the Mister Men.  ;)
Have you seen the rivets on that?
