OK, so i've done HotT and Warmaster.

Does anyone have any reccommendations for another set of fantasy rules?

I'm looking for unit-based games (in WWII terms i guess 'company level').

I'm currently going back over WFB 1st & 2nd Ed.

Is there a decent set out there i've missed?

I'm looking at Kings Of War from Mantic: http://www.manticgames.com/Hobby/Gaming.html

Designed for 28mm, but fixed sized units rather than steadily shrinking like Warhammer. I think if you change inches to cm you'll be good to go for 10mm.

Lord of the Rings, but maybe this is too much of a skirmish game?

Fantasy doesn't rule. Pike and shot does!

Hi Martyn,

Cheers for the link.  They're basically 'WFB by another name' eh? Not surprising given that they're written by Alessio Cavatore!

Interesting and simple set though, so i'll give them some thought.

As i said, i've dug out my old WFB 1st & 2nd Edition sets, and these Kings of War rules are surprisingly similar really, without all the unneccesary charts.

Howdy Luddite,

I agree with Fierce, Pike and Shot is lots of fun.

However, I used to play way back when a set of fantasy rules by Chipco, it is now in its third edition. I havent tried that edition, each base is a unit, units take a couple of hits/moral markers before it is removed but they can recover their hits/morale if they win a close combat and start over on the hits/moral.

Here is the web address: http://www.sabersedge.com/chipco/

Chrysanthemum Throne is a very cool game for warfare during the Samurai period, lots of figures some very interesting concepts in the game mechs aslo.

I have fun searching for a set of rule you will enjoy for fantasy wargaming  ;)

unbridled fury is good, can simulate everythng from sci-fi fire-fights to medieval mellees, unit creator, free, good a simulateing the chaos of battle (while not makeing you feel helpless) . SOBH is really small scale skirmish thats dead simple, (just two stats) and has a unit creator, not free, but really cheap. by the way, the 1rst and 2nd edition of WHFB are before my time. because you are still useing them, I think I can assumed they have some enduring merit. what sets them apart from 8th?
Glory and Fame! blood is our name! souls full of thunder! hearts of steel! killers of men! a warriors friend! sword to avenge our fallen brothers to the end! one day to, I may fall; I shall enter odins hall!I shall die, sword in hand! my name, and my deeds shall scorch the land!

No need but thanks.

Got them downloaded using a different browser.

Hmm...well, they're certainly comprehensive, but on an intitial readthrough they seem very much a modified and more complex version of Warhammer Fantasy Battles, with bits of 40K thrown in.  Also they seem to be 'massed skimish' rather than unit-based (why include rules for 'getting up from prone' if not?)

Think i'll pass as they look a little messy and overcomplex, but thanks for the reference anyway mate.

Hi Luddite,

I don`t know if this helps, but the Dungeon World 3rd edition contains rules for complete mass battles as well as skirmish level and rpg. Now one of two things will happen there... either you can wait until Leon gets them published (but he`s so busy with running Pendraken, doing back to back shows, running miniatures production, etc, that it may be some time before they reach print... or Leon may suggest I put them up on my website sometimes soon. Either way, I would highly recommend these 3rd ed rules as I think they might be exactly what you are looking for (I`ve used them for going on eight years now, for my own and club games).

Cheers,

Six  :)

Impetus? Apparently there's a fantasy variant coming out quite soon, in the meantime there's a fan made mod on their forum. Me and Mexican Dave are planning on re-cyling all our old 28mm Fantasy figs into this, but the system works with any scale, just need bigger or smaller tables. Well worth a look.
