Thank you for the heads up.   Always a great read with some very pretty pictures !

I've just skimmed through issue #70 and noticed the thought provoking editorial ('Time Enough ?') which I think contrasts the natural inclination to buy/paint up/collect more with the growing realisation that there will be a very limited opportunity to actually use them (if ever).   This is perhaps a particular issue given the huge variety of rule sets, figure sizes and periods that are on offer. 

This chimed with something I've been thinking about recently.   I very much enjoy the process of collecting new armies but, even though I buy multiple 'sides', there is always a lurking question about how many times this shiny new project will actually get used when finally finished.   10mm Seven Years War or AK47 African Warlords - I just don't know enough people who are interested.

Join a club perhaps ?   I've tried this and found the experience frustrating.   The weekly evenings were very haphazard, with small games (due to setting up/clearing away time) and minimal organisation.   Perhaps things have changed since.

Had a bit of a read, mainly based on Glorfindal's post above - did read the article about casualty removal - did wonder why it said continue on page 3 (on page 2), then at the end of page 3 it jumped to page 18 - a rather novel page layout approach - especially to a digital publication where page count is pretty nominal at best. Anyway.

As to too many games. Yep. That is definitely a thing.

I'm fortunate to have a group of around 10 local gamers of whom about half can host games at their homes - which means that I can get a game pretty much every week (not that I am always free). And we do manage to fit in the odd all day game when various commitments allow, and as we get older and children are a university (or beyond) there is hope more days arrive.

But even so there are around 40 likely gaming slots per year. And we are often bitten by the shiny syndrome - and certain of the group are much worse for this than others, and some are very slow to buy into anything new.

We have got into the habit of trying to play the same game several weeks in a row, simple to make the effort of relearning rules worthwhile. 

But there is always the lure of something new - for example I spent a good chunk of this morning looking at RCW rules and scenarios. And reading the above probably came at a good time. A lot of my interest in RCW stems from having pretty extensive WWI armies, and wanting an option to re-use them (obviously with some extra flavourful units added...)

But on reflection I wonder why this is a thing for me. My Russian WWI troops I think have only got on the table once, and whilst we used WWI rules, it was using an earlier scenario (perhaps Crimea, can't quite recall). The early war western front WWI troops haven't got on the table for some time (years), but the late war Germans did get a couple of battles in against my mate's French last year.

So the existing WWI troops rarely get on the table - and I am thinking of adding some more obscure units to play a more obscure conflict, that I only know the barest outline of. I think a key message on one of the  sites was 'RCW isn't WWI' so its probably not as close a map across as I think.

So maybe I will park RCW as an idea for a while.

All of the above happened after spending a bit of time the other day looking at the raft of stuff on my desk (or adjacent to it) and wondering what should be next up on the painting queue. Some 3d printed 10mm dwarves won - not least as they look to be a quick win with 90% of the figures being armour!

But why is it so much easier to add to the lead* mountain that it is to mine the slopes to complete existing projects?

Read my way through it and enjoyed the read. So thanks for posting the link.

That said, BKC was the only game I play so the rest were interesting but not relevant.

The casualty removal article didn't tell me anything I didn't already know and could be summed up as "there are many ways to represent casualties suffered in battle, none are particularly 'realistic' but they all work ... for a certain value of "work" ... take your pick."

Too many board games? Depends on the board games I guess. To be fair these days I use Board Game Arena and pack in 12 - 15 games a week on average. But then I'm playing things like Res Arcana, Carcasonne or Space Base not Drang Nacht Osten. I still hope to get back to face-to-face board gaming however.

I don't have too many figures, I have projects I am still planning!

Fred mentioned that he is fortunate to have many local opportunities for wargaming. That was much the same for me in younger years but now I can't find anyone within a hundred miles (unless I want to play Warhammer 40K and such like, which I don't)

I look forward to all the AAR's in each Warning Order issue. As I am principally a board gamer, the nostalgic reviews of such is also of great interest.

I always love reading Warning Order especially as it still features Age of Reason a game that I've always enjoyed back on the first edition.

I still enjoy casualty removal or tracking by dice.  I've never liked the Black Powder style where a whole unit just disappears 👍

I'm late to this discussion but was particularly interested in Fred's thought process

I've been wrestling with the too many troops and not enough game time for the last few years. And that's despite playing 108 games in 2025.

Having said that our group have added two new rule sets in the last year. Lion Rampant and the ancient naval set I'm working on.

In contrast to Fred wanting to extend an existing period these two gave us something very different to what we currently play.

With the RCW from WWI thinking - I think some of it is simply trying to lower the barrier to entry for a new period. If I can use a chunk of my WWI infantry and cavalry figures for RCW then I only need to focus on some of the unique units and commanders, and games can happen. 

As it happens I have parked RCW (again). 

Current focus is on Armoured Clash - which is unusual for me in it being an army in a box - which does make the whole purchasing process much simpler!
