David 'Syd' Lawrence (61), fast bowler for Gloucestershire & England. The first British-born black man to represent England, whose career was cut short after suffering a horrible knee injury playing against New Zealand. Was recently diagnosed with MND.

This is really sad news - he was a very genuine guy despite the stardom and daft TV programmes and the like - met him on the Blizzard of Ozz tour in Liverpool and he signed my (vinyl - they were the days!) copy of Black Sabbath's first album. Not a *great* vocalist but a unique and powerful one, difficult (if not impossible) to imitate.

Gonna listen to lots of Sabbath today, and the sublime "Diary of a Madman".
