Movement Trays?

I saw some of these the other day and was wondering how many people use them?

I'm making some for FOG and FOG-R, plasti-card and plastrut. Will also work for my Warmaster stuff. Dont buy the GW ones though.

I had a cople I made for my ork and goblin warhammer army. I had two collums of 40 goblins each and they were a sod to move

I have used the GW ones, or rather I bought a pack and made two trays, but then I switched to making my own from plastic card and they are a lot cheaper.  Now I still have the GW parts lying around, I use the card for Sci-Fi buildings, the 20 mm squares work well  for that.  I never used trays for 10 mm miniatures though, don't really see how you can.

Yeah, I'm considering making some masters using the laser machine and then casting them up in resin.

I use magnetic trays for my 15mm Napoleonic infantry. Each one is a battalion column of assault. The main problem I find is that players are reluctant to take the figures off the tray and try to defend in column (yes, I know the Archduke Charles tried to train the Austrians to do it, but I'm not convinced it ever worked).

I agree, in theory they should be realy useful but they never look right on the table, especially for 28mm figs.  I think the issue might be that a "unit" in WHAB might be about a dozen to 20 figures which are individually based, to me this looks like a skirmish game, putting the figures in a movement tray just looks too regular.

Also the bases are normally those big plastic ones which raise the figure up off the table, putting them in a movement tray raises them even more so that in extreme cases they look like they're hovering way above the table.

i think that could be why i dont like them Dan. I'm a bit OCD about having thin bases. For some reason this doesnt bother me with GW stuff but i cant cope with it in any other game/scale.

  I sometimes build movement tray so I can use miniatures both single men skirmish and massed/stand combat. I got this idea several times ago when played SJ Ogre. Very usefull for infantry.

I have to say that unlike most things GW their movement trays are pretty good value.  You still have to stick them together but it takes the hassle out of cutting your own.  I think they are about £6 for two A4 sheets and the struts which is about the going rate for platicard at the mo. I went to a model shop the other day and they wanted £2.50 a sheet!  Maybe not as cheap but it is much easier.  I use them for Warhammer Ancients and FOG.

TMC - no doubt. I walk past em in St Johns and go to Renes - the art shop in Bold St, 60-70p a sheet, 40-50p for the relavent plastrut peices. 1 Sheet will do enough for most armies.
