Hi

As it seems a bit quiet around here at the moment I thought I would start a Friday Quiz. Biggest 'no-prize' on the top shelf for identifying where this photo was taken:

The boy is T13A Sunray Minor.

Hi

Gwydion has hit the jackpot. Another clue for those still to work it out, photo taken in the cemetery on the hill in the background:

Hi

And the answer is.....

See Gwydion's post above, Operation Mercury, the German airborne invasion of Crete May 1941. Hill '107' in the background held by 22nd New Zealand Battalion. The bridge is over the (dry) River Tavronitis, immediately to the west of Maleme airfield also defended by the 22nd Battalion (see map). Many German gliders landed in this area and sustained heavy casualties in so doing. However the dry river bed enabled them to reorganise under cover before the troops assaulted the airfield and the hill.
There is an excellent scenario by Bill Slavin on the Battlefront WWII website here (easily adapted for other rules): http://www.fireandfury.com/scenarios.shtml#Med

A couple of photos of the Commonwealth cemetery overlooking Suda Bay:

And to compare, the German cemetery on hill 107:

Have a good weekend
