Today I stumbled across something obvious #-o
Next year, 2022, is the 80th anniversary of 1942 :o

This leads to two thoughts:

  • can it really be 10 years since I ordered my 1/3,000th scale WWII ships
  • the 80th anniversary of the the two campaigns I mainly bought these ships for is rapidly approaching

Over the next few months I'll work on:

  • getting ready to play Defending the Malay Barrier, The ABDA Campaign by Old Dominion GameWorks (using GQ I/II)
  • finalising my scenario for Balikpapan, the fifth and last of my historic scenarios for the Dutch East Indies Campaign
  • developing 7 historic scenarios for the Guadalcanal campaign

I was delivering a coaching techniques session this week. The issue I used as an exercise was "what wargames project should I do next?"

Had a very enthusiastic and innovative coach. We discussed my hermit tendencies and touched upon my end of life preparations.

The answer I was looking for was "Imperial Romans" or "Napoleonic Russians".

2022 sees the 40th anniversary of buying some of my unpainted 1/72 plastics.  Maybe they should get priority now.

I have some Heroics & Ros micro armour in a similar way, albeit in a basic coat of Humbrol enamel green.

Congratulations Captain =D>

Made a start on pulling together the SDS (Ship Damage Summaries) for the Japanese for Defending the Malay Barrier, The ABDA Campaign
I've got almost all the cruisers and larger vessels, there's a few where I'll have to use sister ships :)
Next will be working through the destroyers, definitely some using sister ships will be required :!!

I've done the first pass through the Japanese destroyers and am very pleasantly surprised that I have about half the destroyers or suitable sister ships :o :)

Next pass on the destroyers will involve working out what destroyers I haven't already used and which I can safely use more than once as they are in different parts of the campaign :-B @-)

Started on the ABDA (American British Dutch Australian) order of battle to check we have all the major vessels required :-\

Pierre the Shy has all the British and some of the Dutch :)

The way the campaign has been set up is quite interesting, the ABDA doesn't really have a chance to fully stop the Japanese advance, but slowing down the advance will mean that the level of the Japanese victory will be reduced. The ABDA players task is not easy, but with good planning (and a healthy dose of good luck) they can make the IJN work hard for an out and out victory.

We played the Solomons campaign from ODGW a couple of times so pretty au fait with how this one will run. Need to sort out all the ships and get out of the current COVID lockdown, so don't see this kicking off till early 2022 at least. I have the Dutch "what if" Scharnhorst style battlecruisers and ex HMS Tiger on the stocks at the moment, as well as some additional cruisers and RN destroyers....the ABDA will need every ship they can get and then some....
