Hey.......We're almost up to 1990 now !  ;)

I'd have to admit I much prefer rural Wales...Especially the pace of life.....I couldn't bear to go back to living in, or near, a town or city !!! That'd drive me even more insane than I am now....(As much as it would upset those who prefer the towns/cities, to come and live somewhere as quiet as Techno Towers.)

There's nothing I REALLY feel like we miss out on.....Except mobile phone signals. =).....Those are hopeless....I mean..we've go line of sight to a very tall mast on the other side of the 'valley', about 1,000 yards/metres away....No signal at the bottom of our drive, AT ALL.
Why one of the mobile 'providers' doesn't stick a 'dish' on that is beyond me.....It could cover a huge area.

Faster interweb would be nice.....But I can live with what we get. :)

My body clock still seems to function as if I was still working, with me waking up on average around 4.30am, even though I've been 'retired' for over 6 months now :'(.

As for rural living, it is a dream, but we're lucky where we live as we have open countryside on our doorstep, yet have the benefits of Bristol too. So now I don't have to drive anywhere really, other than for some items for the weekly shop. If it wasn't for having to go to Edinburgh to pick and drop pff our daughter at Uni, we wouldn't have used a tank of petrol since lockdown!

I know what you mean Techno! I was brought up in Smoggy  :o
left in 1990 to join the Army.
settled in the valleys when I left Army in 2014 (just above Neath)
now I live in Hohenfels, Bavaria surrounded by wild Bavarian forests. (Nuremberg 40 mins away, Regensburg 30 Mins away)
I much prefer the countryside to city life.

I'm a city boy through and through now. Did my bit of rural living as a teen, never again!

As to sleep patterns in retirement, I used to complain that work forced me to go to sleep when other people were tired and get up when they felt refreshed. I averaged somewhere around 6 hours sleep a night and felt shattered all the time. Now I go to bed between two and four and get a solid seven and a half to eight and a half hours sleep and feel much better for it. On odd occasions I go "full vampire" and sleep all day after being awake all night.

Also, every day is now Saturday. Haven't been to church. Haven't been to work. Must be Saturday! :D

I have been assured in the past, by one of my doctors, that it is "not a real thing." I think he was one breath away from suggesting cold showers and a bracing cross country run.

That sounds sadly familiar as well, it took me 16 years to get a proper diagnosis from a sleep specialist.  There isn't a cure for it unfortunately, but at least now I know why I've been tired for nearly 2 decades.

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

Techno II

I'm beginning to wonder whether the fact that I wake up umpteen bloody times during the night, is a 'throwback' to the time I needed to go and have a pee every hour. (Before I got my prostate scraped/reduced.)

I get a decent, uninterrupted, seven hour sleep maybe once a month. I don't feel tired when I get up, but come 9 or 10 in the evening I'm usually shattered.

I can fall asleep almost anywhere, anytime when it's light and struggle to sleep when it's dark. Alas, no time zone has it's daytime when it's dark :)

I think somewhere in my brain there must be a bit that's been fitted backwards :D

The only time it came in handy was university .... sadly, not in burning the midnight oil over my textbooks but literally partying 'til the sun rose :)

I'm afraid not.  In normal years I spend up to three months over winter in Australia, with my son and his family.  Jet lag is not an issue if you get a flight that arrives around 22:00.  You arrive shattered after 24hrs without proper sleep and just crash until the next morning.  The irregular sleep pattern soon kicks in again, but at least you can sit outside on the decking with a bottle of something red from the Yarra Valley and watch the moths and the occasional prowling Huntsman.

I have AD/HD, and have very hard time trying to keep up with the normal sleep rhythm. Also when I have hard time falling asleep, I need to go full spasm mode with my feet to relieve some of the energy I have.

There is a vast amount of neurological stuff that affect the sleep I wager. And I need to take my dose of amphetamine medicine on work days to actually "wake up" and be effective little soldier.

It annoys me that I cant practice my craft in the late hours, because the police will come ask for my tax number.
