Saw these over on the TtS! Forum but just wanted to say excellent job again. Looking forward to the Heraclea battle report. Can you still have a pyrrhic victory if you play both sides?

Matthew, if I may ask.

How have you achieved that ground effect on the bases shown here?

That is an impressive display!  :-bd =D>

Superb detail.
Having never seen a Persian pavise in such detail before; I wonder hoe the originals were constructed.
Can anybody explain?

They were covered wickerwork, designed to stop arrows primarily.

Yes.....I took a small slab of a thinned Milliput type putty....and then slapped some green stuff oblongs on the front.

Ah, right...That's not what you meant, is it ?  :D

Thanks folks!  I am midway through a Heraclea battle report right now.  Unintentionally the game recreated some of the drama of the original battle.

The basing is dead simple:
Pva sand, mix in some cork or rock rubble.
Do not paint the sand.
Hit it with a coat of Devlan mud.

Hit some patches with the GW cracked earth technical basing paint (forget the name).

Drybrush one or two colors.

Pva some mixed static grass.

Pva tufts directly on top of the grass which helps to secure it.

Try harder than I did to keep vegetation somewhat consistent within an army group and it adds to the effect.  My Indians and my Tyrells all have prominent flower bushes which really pulls them together.  I try to avoid lush greens for my arid peoples.
