I re-fought the same scenario tonight with Orcs (that's playing against Orcs, not substituting Middle Earth creatures for the French), and it was an overwhelming French/Italian victory, after a hard-fought infantry slog.

Two factors:
1. My first shooting roll of the game was 6 dice, scoring 6 hits. (Back in the game! :d)
2. Orcs brought the battle to a conclusion by failing (and routing) 5 of his units in morale tests during a single shooting phase, effectively breaking 2 more of his brigades and making it 3 out of 5 Austrian brigades broken, to none of the French/Italians.

Refought the same game with Sunjester last night....... The French won

And I can confirm that the "SUN-Oh did I roll 6 out of 6 hits-JESTER" managed just that twice and an three occasions saved all of 5+ hits on his units.

Back to normality.

Right, from now on we make him use Too Fat Laddie dice.
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

Might be better if we  made him throw d3's- He would move a lot but combat would be more even.
