I won't bore you with the break down into foot mounted and 'models' (vehicles, guns...)

I use a spreadsheet to calculate my orders that almost never come to complete packs :-[ Thanks again Leon & co for your patience with my part packs

I then use the spreadsheet to track my painting

Unpainted 678 10mm  I think I need to start planning my next project :-\

Then, I note each pack I buy.  This gets added to my lead mountain as I buy them.
When I paint, I make a note, and this comes off the mountain.
Extra figures get used up padding out gun crews, command groups and as status markers (pre 1900). Very few go into the spares box.

:) Works for me.

A very different approach to me. I see things that I like the look of, and buy them, adding them to the lead mounting for that project. It's quite rare that I actually work through in detail what I will need. The Samurai are one of the few exceptions to that - where I planned the purchases quite carefully. But I have added to that project, before I finished the first part of it.

Only having 678 unpainted would seem wrong...

678!!??

Even adding a zero I doubt you are touching the sides of my lead mountain!

Looks like i'm not doing too badly with my count  ;D ;D ;D

In honesty the stuff that tends to stick in the unpainted pile is mostly 28mm. They just go so much slower than the small scales.

fred.

Out of curiosity I've just done some counting of painted 10mm figures
Sengoku Japanese - 330
Dwarves - 550 (some high density units here)
Forces of Nature - 270

Each of these take up approximately 1 A4 sheet of paper in area. Which might seem a strange measurement, but as much of my stuff is in box files, really useful boxes, or Bisley drawers, each of which has the surface area of approximately A4, its quite convienent.

My only concern is that on a previous count, I had 113 A4 equivalents of figures (both painted and unpainted).  And taking a rough average of 400 figures per A4 layer, that gives some 40,000 figures...

Tanks and larger scales will bring it down (I hope).  But unpainted will have higher counts.

At this stage I'm not sure I want to continue with counting or not....

Freight costs are a major factor for us in the Antipodes, it is common practice to combine orders and share the freight costs

If you need a few more x the cost of freight and the time delay is significant

Hence the need to think about my next project :-\

I haven't settled on my purchasing style yet.

I have carefully planned out a couple of projects in the past and buy all the figures, only to completely rethink them once I get them. I don't really like having excess figures for a project, but find I can usually make use of leftovers as casualties and the like and it's nice having a pool of figs to draw from.

I've a more standardised basing now so could probably carefully plan better, but I've taken to starting small with an army pack or the like then build from there rather than massively increasing the mountain. Having recently done a few armies I've allowed myself a new addition.
