Thanks for pointing that out. I've read a review of FoB, but got rather an unfavorable impression from it: too much ff-ing about with cards and pips and what have you.

The cards do not involve anything other than turning over as many as the pips you have rolled. There is no obligation to use every card if it is not what you want to do at that point. A lot of the time you are turning cards to find what you actually need to do, eg reload artillery, unjam a machine gun. The biggest faff in the game (which is more to do with getting used to the system) is making sure you use the appropriate dice. The army prep is done with a D20, but in the game you will be using Ds 12, 10, 8, 6 and 4. Your unit may well be able to start an activity with a D8 say, but, dependent on factors, it may then move up or down the range of dice. If unlucky you may end up on a D4 or D6, but if the factors are in your favour you could be looking at a D10 or D12.

This system was developed so that standard sized units of four bases could represent anything from a weak militia unit to a strong elite unit. As I play a number of games of this type in the C19th I tend to mark the back of the command base of a unit  in white, with 1, 2 or 3 coloured bars, so the regiment with the three red battalions may have battalion 1 and battalion 3 with lower morale, operating on a D6, but battalion 2, having arrived at the battlefield fresh, with better supplies and higher morale, may well be operating on a D10. It's easier to play than explain. I thought I might try the FTSC scenario again using FoB2 to see how they compare.

Yes, was thinking of simplifying it further by only having D10s, 8s and 6s, (and using the +1 modifier thereafter - in the same way the current D12+1 is used - and a minus 1 on the D6 instead of the D4) - otherwise an entertaining set of rules with its unpredictability. (Sorry, Cavillarius, this looks complicated to the uninitiated but in reality it's not)

@ Cavillarius. I mentioned FoB because the basing system you have adopted gives you another option in future should you tire of your preferred rules. I don't know where you are located but certainly if ordering from the U.S., the shipping costs are eye watering. Lancashire Games in England also stock these rules, btw. It also helps to see some games in action and, in this respect, you will find FoB games featured somewhere in the following blogs (I should add, I receive no benefit for recommending these rules  :D ):-

I guessed as much, and do appreciate having more options, thanks for that! That's why I was looking into it. I'm in Belgium, so yes, postage is eyewatering indeed. As I said though, I'm happy to spend 60 dollars on a good book, but I need to get a favourable impression first.
