Well, (without looking it up to check) if it was 1844, would the answer be ..... Texas? *

* thinking it became an independent Republic in 1836 and then losing its independence when it became a U.S. State.
I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

Using a series of semi-plausible connections, I believe the correct answer is Arkansas. Or France,
since it would fit the probable number of letters your puzzle is looking for. Wait...Alaska?
