1. Walter Schnaffs

2. Prussian v. French Imperial

3. Very comfortable

4. Umpteenth time

5. 2 players

6. This was a trial for the short game being put on at Phalanx, which went well, although again the French lost a substantial number of troops, including all artillery (again!) to the reserves. The game flowed smoothly and quickly - all over in less than 2hours, so should be able to get a couple of participation games going.

7. the Prussian player could have attained a crushing defeat if he had pushed for the enemy baseline. As a consequence a Prussian minor victory.

What size armies are needed for FK&P? How many bases?

Quote from: fred. on 07 May 2018, 09:17:53 AM
I was just working through the example scenario in FK&P, it has the following units per side

3-4 Generals
5-6 units of cavalry
2-3 Forlorn Hope
3-5 Foot Battallia

Size of the units is up to you. For 10mm I'm thinking 120mm frontage, so using 3no 40x40mm bases for foot, and just 2no 40x40mm bases for the Swedish Cavalry (basically 1no 40x40mm base representing 1 hit in FK&P

I'm trying to get some troops together for a test battle - and I thought I would be short of pike and shot, but I think it will be cavalry that is the problem!

The example scenario is a good sized game :)

3x 40mm bases for foot and a 150mm grid is what all the 10mm players I've seen are planning on using
Except for an occasional outburst of megalomania from Mollinary ;)

Mine are on 30mm bases, does this just mean a smaller grid if I use 90mm frontages?
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.

Yep, I'd probably go for a 100mm grid with 90mm frontages

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Twilight of the Sun King (2nd edition)
2) What armies were confronted? - refight of the battle of Klissow 1702 - Swedes vs Saxons and Poles
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No
5) How many players were in the game? - 2
6) What went well? - One player was new to the system but an expereinced gamer who quickly picked it up and everything went well.
7) What could have been improved? Need serious work on terrain - this is my main aim for 2018.

The battle features a heavily outnumbered Swedish army taking on a good Saxon army with a Polish contingent that is not eager to fight. The Poles are 'Wavering' in the rules and so very fragile. The Swedes have to spread themselves thinly to cover the frontage but are confident. So the are 'Small' and 'Determined' under the rules - this means they have high morale but are vulnerable.

The Swedes moved forward from their starting position to attempt to block their enemies in place with the terrain. In response Poles, on the Swedish left and with a relatively free approach, moved into the attack. The Saxons occupied the rest of the table but had difficult terrain to cross. So they pushed forward but it would take time, the Allied player correctly identified the Swedish Right as the most vulnerable section so pushed there.

The opening stages saw the Poles on the left collapsing fairly quickly as on the right the Saxons struggled to establish themselves & defeat the outclassed Swedish right. This they managed after some swings either way and not long after the Poles withdrew from the battle. By this time the Swedes had engaged the Saxon cavalry on their left, while both sides centre eyed each other with neither side wanting to risk an attack. It became a race for the Swedes to defeat the Saxon left or the victorious Saxon right to slam into the centre. It was a very close run thing but with both sides needing to rout 1 more opposing unit the Swedes launched a final all out attack. The Saxons were dispersed by their movements and so the Swedes were able to hit them in a more or less compact group & secure victory.

It was an excellent, tense game.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - What a Tanker!

Intrigued by this, after finding Gale Force 9's game TANKS wanting, so went looking for a review. Found this. Oh my, the game may play well, but the schoolboy humour? "ring piece"? "impressive bush"?

Not for me, I think.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? -   Star Wars Legion
2) What armies were confronted? -  Imperial and Rebel (imagine that...)
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -  Yes...
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? -  Yes
5) How many players were in the game? - 3

The new:
6) What went well?   The learning of it myself and the teaching of it to Wargaming newbs
7) What could have been improved?   Less specific dice, too many colors it got everyone confused at times(never blame the beer)

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Poseidon's Warriors
2) What armies fleets were confronted? - Romans vs Carthage vs Syracuse
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - absolutely
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - third, third and first
5) How many players were in the game? - three

Rome and Carthage broke on the same turn, leaving the Straights Of Messina clear for the Syracusian fleet to enjoy. The Carthaginians, despite losing 50% of their fleet for no real return, sank the Roman flagship, drown their admiral and desposing of all Roman ships sent to rescue him, meaning both fleets were vunerable to fleeing. The Syracuse fleet stayed safe, away from trouble, only to win by taking both other fleets to over 59% losses.
6) What went well? Surgical strike on the Roman Admiral
7) What could have been improved? The whole Carthaginian playbook!

Last night:

1. Walter Schnaffs

2. French Imperial v. Prussian

3. Very comfortable - many games now played

5. Three - 2 French (including one novice) v. 1 Prussian

6. The game flowed very smoothly, including pre-game and terrain set up - a total of three hours.

7. Surprisingly the Prussians found themselves in defence, with the French delivering the double whammy of charging and ranged fire. The Prussians lost some artillery early on, whilst some was put into reserve and saw little duty. It was a decisive victory for the French, but the Prussians did manage a von Bredow cavalry charge, sweeping away some Turcos.

And today:

1. The Men Who Would Be Kings

2. Upstart Maharaja v. Her Majesty's brave British lads

3. Comfortable with these

4. Second game

5. Two players

6. As the maharaja's forces I did remarkably well, sweeping all before me with my cavalry and tribal levies.

7. The maharaja's sepoys were less spectacular, becoming pinned and gradually falling back as they failed to rally. The British had an assortment of not quite top drawer officers - one abandoned his men as they were overwhelmed by tribesmen; one refused to put his artillery in harms way, constantly falling back after only two rounds at the enemy; the third had read too many Boys' Own adventures, leading his men forward towards advancing cavalry rather than delivering well placed volleys. The entire unit was ridden down for its trouble.

Smoking gun

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - What a Tanker!
2) What armies were confronted? - 20mm German vs. French, 1940 Pz2 and Pz38t v 2 Renault R35.
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? - Yes, prepared by watching youtube videos and reading up online.
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - Yes.
5) How many players were in the game? - two with two watching.

6) What went well? - Command dice mechanic seemed to work well and after you've taken damage it's difficult to do what you want.
7) What could have been improved? Not a lot at this stage as it was the first time for both of us. Tokens are a bit small and light, they are easily knocked off the dashboard.

Panzer 2's are no match for R35's may have been better with 2 Pz38t's but forces were evenly matched points wise. We enjoyed the game and will have another game this Friday.

Now they've knocked me down and taken it, that still hot and smoking gun.

Hep! Devs Vvlt!; Comnenan Byzantines vs Franks; two players, familiar rules, largely satisfactory, but the manouevre is a bit clumsy by comparison with some of the derivatives. Can't complain about the result, however; I had some absurdly lucky rolls (or the enemy had some desperately poor ones) which allowed me to withstand that deadly crusader first impact.
I don't drink coffee to wake up. I wake up to drink coffee.

1. Tin Soldiers in Action

2. SYW Austrian v Prussian

3. Reasonably comfortable at the moment - more play needed to get used to the system

4. This was my fourth game

5. Two players

6. The game played well and the Austrians were beaten, but only after stiff resistance

7. We needed to get the tenacity rule sorted, ie who takes it and at what point in the turn.

1) What ruleset do you use in your last game? - Black Powder
2) What armies were confronted? -                   Russians pursuing French and Confederation Allies
3) Did you feel comfortable with the ruleset? -    Yes, have used them 8 - 10 times previously
4) and... was this the first time you used this ruleset? - No (See above)
5) How many players were in the game? -          Two

The new:
6) What went well? -     The "Warmaster style" command provided an unpredictable pursuit, the French retreating by bounds while leaving delaying forces; the Russians struggling to drive their superior numbers into combat range.
7) What could have been improved? - As ever we probably missed a couple of key points in the rules, but all things considered it was a fascinating game with plenty of decisions for either commander.
