Insanity consists largely of doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome the next time.

Of course,at a certain level he is right.  If his "plan of action" had included assessing the firmness of a human skull  his own pain resistance, and investing in an adequate helmet, he would have two pieces of plywood and less of a reputation as an idiot.  But "pure self confidence" without work is just so much more temping than the combination of self confidence and work -- and most people who realize that know there are better ways to cut plywood.
