Anyone got these? Any good?

I'm looking, again, at LotR gaming in 10mm & am interested in what these are like...not worried about stoopid GW points-match competition gaming etc, but for fighting the big battles...

I have played a couple of games in the shops, when they were trying to sell me it  :D Cant remember it being anything that brilliant to be honest, but I must admit it was quite a while ago.
Sometimes I wonder - why is that frisbee geting bigger - and then it hits me!

Not a bad set of rules but GW is trying to make it similar to their Warhammer Fantasy system.  It is points based and you can tool up your units and characters similar to Warhammer.  I stopped playing because it didn't feel very Tolkienish when you add all of the characters and their special spells/abilities.  I opted to use Warmaster Ancients and just modify some troops for the LOTR armies.

Ah OK - doesn't sound like that's for me then...I'll go back to WMA as well then - any chance you'd share your workings on troop modifications etc?  ;)

Call me mad, but I have been eyeing the fantasy range using FoG army lists -

Skeletons - Med Foot, Poor, Protected, Undrilled, and then defensive spear/bowmen
Giant Skeletons - Heavy Foot, Poor, Protected, Undrilled, Swordsmen
Mummies - Med Foot, Ave, Protected, Undrilled, Impact Foot
Zombies - Undrilled mob

etc, etc.

Its sad really what the old mind gets up to when there's nowt on telly!
I don't think my wife likes me very much, when I had a heart attack she wrote for an ambulance.

Here is what I have so far, I am using WMA & WM fantasy.  The orcs are from WMF with some generic WMA troops and the humans are the late Romans from WM.  Haven't play tested anything yet due to the lack of painted orcs. :(

Found some 'preview' quickstart rules for War of the Ring - here: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?aId=11400003

Not convinced on first look...think I'll go the WM/WMA & BoFA route.

Just to back up what others have said, initially I enjoyed the games of WoTR, lovely figures etc. However, the game is going WH way with characters dominating and it being very much points driven for competition play. Example Aragorn has his special move ability which allows him and the unit he is with to teleport anywhere on the board.

I heard that there are moves at a Black Powder version.

As Gran would say in the Catherine Tate show - "What load of f***ing s**t!!!!!!!"

Oh...dear...

I am so glad I asked this question before dropping the price of a 10mm army on a rulebook - thanks fellas  :)

I really like the GW WOTR rules but don't use any hero/characters. I also don't play it as LOTR either but as Star Wars - "War Of The Force", using the old Star Wars CMG models based upon GW bases etc. As the character stats break the game so badly, we simply play using the character models to act as unit captains or standard bearers etc. For example Princess Leia sits within a company of Rebel Troopers (who use Rohan - Oathsworn Bowmen stats as memory serves) and simply inspires them, she doesn't have any of the toptastic character rules GW suggest for the heroes. It really is a lovely ruleset using it this way. My blog has piccies of one of the companies.

Another cracking ruleset for fast play fantasy is Mantic's Kings Of War. Its still in playtesting, but is free on their website, and is simple and fun. My Christmas project is to paint up an Elf and Dwarf army using Pendrakens.

Hope this helps

The wierd thing is the BP Yahoo group has a long discussion on converting BP to LotR.

That's WMF -> WMA ->WMM -> BP ->WMF!
I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain why you are wrong.
