Interesting thoughts Will.

It reminds me I really must dig out my Pendraken Sassanids to try out with Sword and Spear. I put the army together before Clib sculpted the superb Late Romans, so the Cataphracts are from another manufacturer-that-shall-not-be-named. I used them a lot with Warmaster Ancients, back in the day. My regular opponent for WMA had Early Imperial Romans, which meant games tended to be draws. The EIR self-supporting legionaries were pretty unbeatable in WMA, especially if the got in a good defensive position on a hill. So my cavalry would just bounce off his wall of legionaries, who sat on the hill whilst I went around and killed everything else in his army, which was never enough to break the Romans.

I found it more than a tad frustrating, so as soon as Clib's great Late Romans were released, I build a matching opponent for the Sassanids. Unfortunately that was about when WMA fell out of use at Tring and they only had one game before going to the back of the cupboard and not seeing the light of day since!

I know you listen to music (OK - I THINK I know) when you paint but do you talk out loud as well?

Have you considered pitting your Romans against the Martians (the red planet ones)? It been done but without seriousness.

Ral Partha high elves never worked for me, ever.  They spent to much time preening and admiring each other's hair.

Very nice indeed.

Sometime soon I need to paint up my Roman fleet and the scenery to go with the various fleets! Hopefully this may be some much needed inspiration!
