Our first game of the year was a fantasy dust up between a Dwarf and Orc n goblin force using Mantics Kings of War rule set for the first time. The rules played out pretty well although things didn't go to well for me as the Dwarf general as you can see over on my blog on the following link

Just the inspiration I need to keep working away on my own KoW armies.

Yours look great, esecially the basing.

Good report, and cracking looking armies. Really using the multi-basing options of KoW well.

It does take a game or two of KoW to understand the way it plays, due to it all being the active player as far as attacks go. It is chess like in many ways, and some conventional wargames tactics don't work. As you have discovered getting (and avoiding) flank charges is key.

How many cannons did you have as the Dwarves, they tend to be a mainstay of Dwarf armies in KoW. And how many standard bearers did you have (or other sources of inspiring) they are critical to holding an army together in KoW, allowing you to re-roll failed nerve tests will keep units in the battle much longer.

Really liked the captioned pictures Battle report - rather exciting looking. Any  battle that employs an organ gun is alright in my books.  :)

We just pointed the dwarf army and picked a same point army for the orcs to match them, to get as much on the table top and keep the sides balanced, there was no magic items etc as it really was just a introductory game for myself. Next time out I will pick my own army and add a few gimmicks here and there with magic items and have a different army composition as we will probably play a slightly smaller game and no doubt we will have added some units to the armies. Both these armies Belong to my dad, I have a undead army which is currently undergoing surgery to be compatible with KOW so I will have that more suited to my fighting style.

I really like the games that you and your Dad play. They look fun and with great looking armies 8)

You certainly don't need to worry about adding magic items in KoW - while many are useful, they are far from critical in winning the game, and can be easy to forget about while you are learning what the stats are for various units.

Do add a good few army standard bearers - despite the name you can take as many as you want, 1 per 500 pts was the rule of thumb in KoW1

Yes, I saw the benefit of the reroll from a battle standard, I will be sure to have a few accompanying the army 👍
