Miniature Wargames - Henry's last issue

This is a very significant issue, as it is the last that is edited by Henry Hyde and it is a really good wargamers issue. (Available today on UK shelves at WH Smith).

i feel a little coy about saying that, since it contains an article by my own pen – but setting that aside, the fact that it is Henry's last issue of the magazine and there is a wonderful article by Arthur Harman (a full set of ACW rules on hexes with smaller scales), plus Craig Armstrong extols the virtues of sub 28mm gaming, makes this a really nice and special issue as it substantially gives some support to the smaller scales, something that recent media has not been notable for.

So well done Henry for a marvelous 10 years of support to the hobby and giving so many people a chance to write for the magazine, This is a superb issue for you to have gone out with – a real wargamers treat.

I also will be sorry to see Henry go, he really brought Miniature Wargames back to the top of the hobby. But I am sure he would be the first to wish his successor, John Treadaway, every success for the future. By the way, the rule set in Arthur Harman's article is ECW not ACW!

It is a shame to see Henry go, he made sure that Miniature Wargames was full of articles gamers wanted to read as opposed to articles written to sell products.

Personally I never liked the magazine, despite having bought quite a few issues spread over a few years. It didn't grab me at all and much preferred WS&S and still do.

I think Henry did a great job, his editorship got me reading the magazine again after ignoring it for years. Sadly, I'll be going back to ignoring it again with his departure, since I have no interest in fantasy and scifi, and since the battlegames influence is disappearing too.

I think he was a very good editor, I did buy Battlegames fairly regularly, but stopped getting WI and MW when they got dominated by one or two manufacturers.

I have a subscription to WS&S thanks to Mrs Orcs and I really like it.   

The cost of magazines now at £5.00 a time means I would  rather get  much more informative book on a subject.  So I just buy the odd magazine when going on holiday

Yeah, I think WS&S is going to be my go to now for wargaming magazines. I tend to pick it up when I see it, so I skip issues when I'm not around the shops that sell it when it comes out. I'm going to have to make a firmer effort to make sure I pick it up though. Especially if they get a new regular columnist...

I've subscribed to Battle Games and then MW for several years but over the past year or so have been getting rather disappointed with the magazine so haven't re-subscribed, instead I'll have a look at it in Smiths and see if things improve.

My main bone of contention is that the magazine has been relying on a number of regular columns to fill it's pages, most of which tend to be repetitive, if I see one more article about how to make trees/hedges/huts in 28mm it will be one too soon.  To some extent this may be a lack of material sent in, but Henry seems to have been forced to fill the magazine with his own stuff, this is always very good, but must be a terrific strain on the man so I can't blame him for moving on.

Apart from the article in the last issue about moving down from 28mm I can't think of anything in the past year that has been inspirational, made me want to re-read it or simply keep the magazine for future reference.
