Hi guys:

Sure this will be easy for someone:

What would be the correct proportions for Pike:Matchlocks:flintlocks for an English Sedgemoor campaign army please?

Thanks

Not that easy. The only information I have is from Grant's 'From Pike to Shot'.
He says probably 1 pike to 5 muskets

The Royal army had 6 infantry regiments and all but Dumbarton's (the later Royal Scots) were armed with flintlocks, Dumbarton's had matchlocks.

In theory these would have 12 line companies and 1 grenadier company. The line companies being roughly 1 pike to 2 musket, but the grenadiers all muskets - so the proportion would be something like 4 pike to 8 line muskets to 1 grenadier.

But all the units at the battle only fielded some of the companies of the battalion, 5 to 7 of the 13 of a full battalion, and this included the grenadier company in each case. So the units were small, about 310 - 320 men on average, and had a relatively large % of grenadiers. This means the battalions would be 50 or so grenadiers, 70 - 100 pikes, 140 - 200 muskets - depending on how many companies they had.

I hope this helps.
