What were the colours of the horses that the Prussian Dragoons rode in the SYW? I know that the Cuirassiers favoured black horses. Was that also true of the Dragoons? Did they ride a mix of horses, or a single type?

All my horses are either brown or white. I doubt cavalry type horse colours lasted much after 1756.

Alex,

I also doubt that this kind of thing would last long into a war. But the Prussians thought that the darkest horses were the best. Therefore the black and darkest brown horses, and biggest, went to the Cuirassiers. The dragoon horse were also meant to be dark but they could have smaller horses. So they got the less dark black and dark brown horse and all the small black/dark brown ones.

I reckon that for ceremonial purposes or at the start of any H&M  campaign, nice identically coloured horses were the order of the day. However, come the time for replacement mounts they would be happy to get a horse, any horse, irrespective of colour. they might have had the proviso that the biggest animals went to the heavy cavalry and carabiniers, next to the dragoons and so on down the grades.

There are records of even the Scots Greys without the iconic mounts.
